Our social well-being indicators are based on social determinants of health. These indicators are the economic and social conditions that shape the health of individuals and communities. Social determinants of health also determine the extent to which a person possesses the physical, social, and personal resources to identify and achieve personal aspirations, satisfy needs, and cope with the environment. Social determinants of health are about the quantity and quality of a variety of resources that society makes available to its members. Important considerations include both the quality and their distribution amongst the population. 1

Education is a significant determinant of health, as educational attainment influences career options and lifetime earning potential. University graduates earn significantly higher incomes than high school graduates—on a per annum and lifetime basis. Education also provides some protection against economic fluctuations. Individuals with higher education are less likely to become unemployed in the event of an economic downturn. They are also more likely to achieve financial security after retiring. The importance of education has grown as the economy becomes increasingly reliant on industries that require specialized knowledge and technical expertise. 

  • The high school completion rate for both Edmonton Catholic and Edmonton Public Schools has been improving over time. The percentage of students who completed high school within the allotted three years of entering Grade 10 has been steadily increasing.
  • The three-year high school completion rate for the Edmonton Public School District improved from 57.0% in the 2000/01 school year to 76.4% in the 2018/19 school year.
  • In the Edmonton Catholic School District, the three-year completion rate improved from 59.7% in the 2000/01 school year to 86.5% in the 2018/19 school year.
