Event Description: Universal basic income describes a program where a modest cash transfer, enough to cover someone’s basic needs, ought to be provided regularly and unconditionally to every citizen. In Canada, the program has been piloted in the past, but a long-term and permanent initiative has yet to come to fruition. For this Lunch & Learn event, Professor Karl Widerquist and author of “Universal Basic Income: Essential Knowledge” (MIT Press, 2024), will guide us through the concept of the program, analyze arguments for and against it, and make the case for the value of this simple yet radical idea.
NOTE:Â Copies of Karl Widerquist’s book, “Universal Basic Income: Essential Knowledge” will be made available for purchase courtesy of Audreys Books at this event. The price of the book is $22.99 plus GST. Cash, debit, and all major credit cards are acceptable forms of payment.
