Event Description: In Canada, 58% of food produced is lost each year, about 35.5 million tonnes of food. About 32% of this food waste is avoidable, meaning perfectly good food that could have been eaten was thrown away. In a time of increasing food security, this is a concerning situation. Fortunately, agencies like the Leftovers Foundation are dedicated to rescuing perfectly good food, diverting it from landfills, and putting it to good use resulting in feeding our communities and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For this Lunch & Learn event, we will learn about the Leftovers Foundation’s food rescue efforts and spark conversations about how we can meaningfully address food security both in the short-term and the long-term.
