In recent years, Edmonton City Council has made ending homelessness a strong priority. A major part of ending homelessness is supporting the building of more affordable housing development to address that need. Nevertheless, zoning bylaws guide what municipalities are permitted to build and where. In order to facilitate more options and flexibility in the building of affordable housing units, amendments to zoning bylaws are necessary to streamline the process. In this Lunch and Learn session, we will discuss recent changes to a number of zoning bylaws City Council has passed and outline what further steps are needed as we go forward towards housing solutions that help our most vulnerable and make Edmonton a more vibrant and safe community.
Speakers: Michaela Cochran, Social Planner, Affordable Housing and Homelessness, Social Development Branch, City of Edmonton
Laura Murphy, Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness (ECOHH)
