    Executive Summary

    A living wage is rooted in the belief that individuals and families should not just survive, but live with dignity and participate in their community. Differing from the minimum wage, a living wage carefully considers common expenses people pay to live and the wage necessary to cover these expenses for themselves and/or their families and to reach basic financial security.

    It is a calculation of the hourly rate at which a household can meet a modest standard of living, once government transfers have been added to the household’s income and deductions have been subtracted.

    In 2024, the living wage is $20.85, a decrease of $1.40 from the previous year.

    While inflation has increased significantly over the past year, expenses for the living wage reference families have gone down. The largest decreases this year were seen in clothing and footwear, due to changes in shopping patterns, and childcare, due to the gradual implementation of $10/day childcare. At the same time, the reference living wage families saw an increase in government benefits they are eligible for. These trends worked together to lower the living wage.

    Purpose for the project

    News stories are regularly published about funding being dedicated to affordable housing. Still, there is a lack of clarity about how much money is actually out there and where it is going.

    Seeing news headlines about what is seemingly a lot of money being poured into affordable housing while simultaneously seeing the rising number of people experiencing homelessness is confusing. How can more people be sleeping on the streets, using shelters, paying half or more of their income on housing than ever before when there often seems to be money being put towards mitigating these circumstances?

    This project seeks to answer that question, and clear up confusion regarding the representation of the amount of money being put into affordable housing, what is actually being spent, what is being done moving forward, and taking a look at what other Edmontonians right above the cut off for affordable housing are spending on housing.

    Housing is a human right, and an important base to have a good, full life. People experiencing housing insecurity die at a younger age compared to those who are housed and using a shelter is a temporary and undesirable option for many (Buccieri et al., 2022).

    Eligibility for affordable housing does not include all who need it in today’s economy, and the waitlists are long, and unpredictable. Many Edmontonians who rent, but do not meet the affordable housing requirements, as they might make right over the income threshold are still spending too much of their income on rent.

    With the current circumstances impacting the cost of living, there are more people being pulled into poverty or struggling to afford basic needs, like housing, than ever before. The financialization of housing has skewed the market prices of houses and rent and the need for affordable housing is growing.

    Period poverty is a critical issue that affects many people who menstruate worldwide. The compounding factors of financial challenges and the high prices of menstrual products impact the issue that many individuals do not have access to them. It is distressing to think that some people cannot afford basic menstrual products like pads, tampons, or cups, forcing them to resort to unhygienic measures such as utilizing rags or toilet paper during their periods. The high cost of these products makes it even harder for people who are already struggling to afford other necessities such as food or shelter.

    “First Nations children have been dramatically overrepresented in the Canadian child welfare system for more than 50 years” (Blackstock, 2009). According to the 2021 Canadian federal census, 53.8% of children in foster care are Indigenous, but account for only 7.7% of the child population. (Government of Canada, n.d.). It is suggested that Indigenous children are eight times more likely to come into child welfare care than any other children (Blackstock, 2009).

    The UN (2018) notes that “Today, 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 68% by 2050.” As people continue to be displaced from rural areas with increasing wildfires, rising tides, and other destabilizing climate events, we will likely see numbers rise even higher. With this in mind, we must have a systemic approach to how we will feed ourselves over the next 100 years and more with these figures and demographic migration trends in mind.

    Food Waste Reduction Organizations, are shifting how we address waste for more sustainable practices. There are a number of organizations throughout Edmonton that recognize and engage in food waste reduction services. This can appear in a variety of ways, from how organics wastes are converted to compost, repurposing items, create safer and healthier spaces and even some where food that would otherwise be thrown away can be repurposed or reshared.  Here is a list put together by one of our volunteers of some of these organizations in the Edmonton area.
