211 Edmonton

211 is a 24-hour information and referral line that helps people connect to social, health and government services.

211 Alberta – Edmonton and Area is a program that is operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association – Edmonton Region. 211 provides information/referral services and connects people to a full range of essential social, health, and government services in the community.

Citizens living in the Edmonton, Leduc, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, and Parkland County can reach the Canadian Mental Health Association – Edmonton Region’s 211 services by dialling 2-1-1. Outside of those areas people can call 780-482-4636 to reach 211.

Catholic Social Services

Catholic Social Services is a multi-function social service agency that serves people of all faiths and cultures throughout central and northeast Alberta. Site offers information on CSS programs, which focus on: children and youth, family, immigration and settlement, community, and more.

Published by the City of Edmonton. This section of the site contains information about economic trends such as economic growth, prices, interest rates, income, and employment. Includes information on land use, land inventory, economic trends and forecasts, prices and income, taxes and utility charges (comparison with other cities), and other factors affecting homes, groups, or businesses. The City�s quarterly report City Trends is also available here.    

Edmonton Chamber of Voluntary Organizations (ECVO)    

The ECVO is a charitable organization that seeks to provide leadership and resources for the voluntary sector. Their goal is to be a voice for the not-for-profit sector. Site contains many useful links for non-profits and other resources, including a management library for non-profits and information on numerous voluntary sector management programs. 

Edmonton Community Foundation

The Edmonton Community Foundation exists to help the people of Edmonton and area by encouraging philanthropy and funding charitable activities.

Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues

The Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues is a coalition of 150 independent community leagues across Edmonton. The Federation works towards the betterment of the community through affordable community-based activities and advocating on issues that impact communities. Site includes resources on community consultation and community building.

Edmonton.Com is managed by the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation.  Website contains statistics and reference information for the City of Edmonton and surrounding municipalities on topics such as business and economic development, tourism, demographics, quality of life, economic outlook, and more. 

Homeward Trust        

Homeward Trust Edmonton works to address the ongoing lack of affordable housing sufficient to meet the needs of the city of Edmonton's lower-income and special needs citizens.  Site contains housing related links, reports, and news. 

Pride Centre of Edmonton  

Located in central Edmonton, the Pride Centre of Edmonton provides resources, support and programming for the GLBTTIQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered Transsexual, Intersex & Questioning) community and its supporters in Edmonton, AB and surrounding areas. The Pride Centre also maintains Alberta's largest collection of gay and lesbian books and resources, with an online searchable catalogue.

United Way of the Alberta Capital Region is a registered charity working to bring people and resources together to build caring, vibrant communities. Site offers information on United Way initiatives and community news and arising needs.

Boys + Girls Clubs of Edmonton and Big Brothers Big Sisters

Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters (BGCBigs) is committed to the healthy development of all children. We provide a diverse array of mentoring and after school programs to meet the needs of our community’s children and youth so they have the tools and supports they need to be successful in school and in life. We are the only Boys & Girls Clubs and Big Brothers Big Sisters across Canada who have merged under one organization. Campaign 2000: End Child Poverty in Canada:

Campaign 2000 is a cross-Canada coalition of over 90 national and community organizations that are seeking to end child poverty. Site features report cards on child poverty in Canada, as well as numerous resources and reports regarding poverty and low income.  

Child Care Advocacy Association of Canada    

CCAAC is dedicated to working together for the right of all children to access a publicly funded, inclusive, quality, non-profit child care system. Site contains information on CCAAC campaigns and projects, as well as a collection of resources.     

Families First Edmonton    

Families First Edmonton is a research project to determine whether delivering health, family support and recreation services in a coordinated way can lead to better outcomes for low-income families. Site contains project documents and research reports.    

Justice for Girls

Justice for Girls works to promote social justice and an end to violence, poverty and racism in the lives of teenage girls who are low income or homeless. The organization fights for social justice based on the feminist belief that young women in poverty are the experts of their own experience. The website contains a number of publications, links and resources related to justice and equality for girls.  

Public Interest Alberta: Child Care Campaign    

Public Interest Alberta (PIA) is a province-wide organization focused on education and advocacy on public interest issues. One of PIAs areas of focus is childcare. The site contains editorials and fact sheets, as well as links to relevant news articles and websites.   

Success by Six   

Success By 6 is a prevention initiative intended to ensure that all preschool children in Edmonton have the necessary development and support for a lifetime of growth and achievement. Housed under the United Way of the Alberta Capital Region, this site includes copies of the annual reports on Edmonton's children and youth.   

The Family Centre   

The Family Centre believes that, with the right opportunities and tools, people can make choices that lead to success.  It helps Alberta families, communities, institutions and workplaces make positive choices that lead to successful outcomes. 

Caledon Institute of Social Policy   
The Caledon Institute is a social policy think tank that seeks to promote discussion on poverty and social policy. Publications focus on a variety of topics, including income security, health, social services, and poverty.

Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA)   
The CCPA is an independent research institute concerned with issues of social and economic justice. Offices are located in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. While they address local issues, they also tackle national and international issues. This site gives a sense of types research being conducted across Canada.  

Canadian Council on Social Development  
The Canadian Council of Social Development is a non-profit organization that aims to develop and promote progressive social policies inspired by social justice, equality and empowerment. It focuses on such issues as poverty, social inclusion, and housing. Site offers poverty line, income and welfare statistics, and an opportunity to browse their online publications catalogue. Site also contains numerous links organized thematically, such as social policy links, poverty links, and welfare links.  

Canadian Social Research Links  
A virtual resource centre for Canadian social research information. Site contains an extensive links page related to social policies and social issues. Includes such topics as welfare (income supports), minimum wage, poverty measures, provincial and federal sites, and more. Offers various articles and statistics and publishes a weekly newsletter that can be emailed directly to you or viewed online. Links are listed by jurisdiction and alphabetically by theme.   

Conference Board of Canada  
The Conference Board of Canada is a not-for-profit organization with expertise in running conferences and conducting, publishing and disseminating research, helping people network, developing individual leadership skills and building organizational capacity. It is also a specialist in economic trends, as well as organizational performance and public policy issues. Site offers and online database (pay service) and an online library (free, must register for account) from which publications can be downloaded.   

Connexions Online  
Connexions Online features information about resources and organizations around the world fostering democratization, economic justice, environmental responsibility, civil liberties, and the creation and preservation of community. The Connexions Online Library features thousands of documents and articles on a wide variety of issues. The Connexions Directory lists several thousand grassroots organizations.    

Institute for Research on Public Policy   
IRPP seeks to improve public policy in Canada by generating research, providing insight and sparking debate that will contribute to the public policy decision-making process and strengthen the quality of the public policy decisions made by Canadian governments, citizens, institutions and organizations. The IRPP regularly publishes research papers on a variety of topics as part of its Choices series.   

Policy Options: Institute for Research on Public Policy  
Published by the Institute for Research on Public Policy. Policy Options is a Canadian  public policy magazine. Its goal is to encourage an informed debate on the important public policy issues of today, and of tomorrow. It includes short articles on the immediate issues that dominate the headlines, combined with in-depth analyses of longer-term and emerging issues.  

Statistics Canada  
Statistics Canada produces statistics that help Canadians better understand their country, its population, resources, economy, society and culture. In Canada, providing statistics is a federal responsibility. As Canada's central statistical agency, Statistics Canada is legislated to serve this function for the whole of Canada and each of the provinces. In addition to conducting a Census every five years, there are about 350 active surveys on virtually all aspects of Canadian life.

Alberta College of Social Workers

Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) is the regulatory body for social workers in Alberta, and promotes advocacy around social policy issues. Their website offers links to related websites and publications.

Alberta Demographic Information 

Published by Alberta Treasury Board and Finance, this site contains quarterly demographic statistics including population growth, births, deaths, international migrants and interprovincial migrants. Demographic information on each of the Alberta Provincial Electoral divisions is also available.

Alberta Economic Information   

Published by the Alberta Ministry of Finance. The Ministry's Economics and Statistics unit tracks economic trends and provides forecasts. Site includes the Current Economic Indicators by Province (statistics on employment, housing, salary, wages, GDP, inflation, etc.) and the weekly Economic Review (provides current economic commentary and statistics on employment, job growth, market trends and more). Also provides current and historical labour force statistics, and Economic Outlook and Economic Spotlights publications.

Canada West Foundation

The Canada West Foundation conducts and communicates non-partisan economic and public policy research of importance to the four western provinces, the territories, and all Canadians. Site offers information on current projects and copies of the foundation's publications.

Centre for Public and Legal Education Alberta

The Centre for Public and Legal Education Alberta's mission is to enhance the accessibility and quality of justice realized in Canada. It addresses its mission by creating learning opportunities and building learning communities that facilitate the creation, management, exchange, and integration of knowledge among people within the justice system and between them and the general public. The website contains a variety of online resources, including publications, research, presentations, news, workshops, and podcasts.

Government of Alberta 

The Government of Alberta website offers links to the various ministries, contact information, Alberta statistics and online services such as financial resources and people services.

Healthy U

Healthy U is a Government of Alberta website that provides Albertans with "current, evidence-based information about healthy eating and active living choices and factors that affect health."

Parkland Institute

The Parkland Institute is an Alberta-wide, non-partisan research centre situated within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta. It studies economic, social and political issues facing Albertans and Canadians, and specifically focuses on Canadian political economy. Site offers copies of research reports, newsletters and media releases, as well as links to relevant websites.

Pembina Institute   

The Pembina Institute aims to advance sustainable energy solutions through innovative research, education, consulting and advocacy. Site offers copies of newsletters, media releases, opinion editorials and research publications.

Public Interest Alberta

Public Interest Alberta (PIA) is a province-wide organization focused on education and advocacy on public interest issues. PIA focuses its attention on ten broad areas: childcare, post-secondary education, seniors, democracy, privatization, environment, rural issues, living wage, education, and cities. Site features information on PIA initiatives, research reports, and links to other relevant resources. 

Social Policy Framework Library – Government of Alberta

This digital library was designed to store and make accessible Alberta Social Policy Framework public consultation reports and other background documents used to shape the framework. 

Live Local Alberta
This website contains information about eating locally in Edmonton, including information on why eating locally matters, where consumers can find local products, and Edmonton-area retailers, producers, processors, and others. It also contains information about the Good Food Box Project, a social enterprise which provides healthy weekly food deliveries to Edmontonians – some at market value and some at reduced price for lower income families.
