    Date of Publication:2012
    Abstract:

In April of 2007, Kids Help Phone published Cyber-bullying: Our Kids’ New Reality. The report collected responses from over 2,500 young people on the topic of cyberbullying, which was at that time, a very new phenomenon. Since then, cyberbullying has gained significant attention in research, counselling, and educational settings. It has also become a well-known issue among the general public in Canada, particularly after online harassment was implicated in the suicides of several young people in late 2010 and early 2011.

This document is a follow-up to our 2007 report. In it, we will discuss the most recent research-based information on cyberbullying, and provide a short “then and now” overview of a more recent cyberbullying survey that we posted to our website in order to highlight some of the trends in online behaviour that our users have shared with us. The report will conclude with revisited recommendations on what adults can do to support young people as they navigate an increasingly technologically mediated social reality. Date of Publication:2012
    Abstract:

For the second year in a row, The Salvation Army, in conjunction with Angus Reid Public Opinion, has conducted polling research to better understand societal perceptions surrounding poverty. This year, we studied opinions about mental illness and addictions.

While previous research has revealed a public which is at times unsympathetic to those living on the streets or in poverty, this new research found that most Canadians are extremely empathetic and compassionate toward those struggling with mental illness and substance addictions. Findings revealed that many Canadians had first or second-hand experience dealing with these issues.[Taken from Overview]

  • 2009 Disability Policy in AB

Title:Disability policy in Alberta: an initial exploration of transition implications.
    Author(s):Clark, Dawne|split|Seel, Keith|split|Clark, Mitchell
    Subject:Disabilities – physical, mental – planning, policy
    Publisher:Institute for Nonprofit Studies
    Place of Publication:Calgary
    Date of Publication:2009
    Abstract:

This initial exploration of transition implications, emerged out of a policy project funded by the Max Bell Foundation. This policy study examined the range of provincial policy envelopes that impact a person with a developmental disability over the course of their life. Focusing on the major transitions, the study presents how service providing organizations work across policy boundaries, and how they see the effects of those transitions on families and individuals. Disability Policy in Alberta identifies six major themes that describe the experience of negotiating a transition point.

  • 2006 Human Resource Crisis

Title:A human resource crisis in the disability services field
Corporate Author: The Alberta Council of Disability Services
    Subject:Disabilities – physical, mental – programs, services
Publisher:The Alberta Council of Disability Services
    Place of Publication:Edmonton
    Date of Publication:2006
    Abstract:

A human resource crisis is developing in the disability services field. Community agencies which support disabled Albertans find it extremely difficult to hire and retain staff. The reason is that funding for wages is too low. Similarly, wages for community staff are significantly lower than the wages paid for similar staffing positions in government. In spite of the efforts of government to provide wage increases in the past, the actual gap between community and government wage rates continues to expand.

  • 2005 Getting To Know Us

Title:Getting to know us: raising disability awareness in Alberta’s schools.
Corporate Author: Alberta Committee of Citizens with Disabilities
    Subject:Education – physically, mentally disabled|split|Disabilities – physical, mental – general
Publisher:Alberta Committee of Citizens with Disabilities
    Place of Publication:Edmonton
    Date of Publication:2005
    Abstract:

This publication grew out of the Alberta Committee of Citizens with Disabilities’ (ACCD’s) first-hand experience with the myths and stereotypes that negatively affect the lives of people with disabilities. ACCD is an organization of and for people with disabilities, and our members deal with discriminatory attitudes every day.
With funding from the Alberta Human Rights, Citizenship, and Multiculturalism Education Fund, we’ve enhanced our school outreach program through the development of the Getting to Know Us curriculum. It builds on our existing program by providing lesson plans for teachers to implement before and after a visiting speaker comes to their class and by encouraging more disability organizations to become involved in school outreach.
The goal of Getting to Know Us is to challenge the stereotypical views that some students and teachers may have of us and, as a result, to reduce discrimination inside and outside the classroom. We believe this will be achieved with the following strategies:
» Providing students and teachers with opportunities to meet someone with a disability
» Providing students and teachers with opportunities to ask questions about disabilities in a familiar learning environment
» Demonstrating appropriate language when discussing disabilities
» Identifying and explaining the myths and stereotypes that shape attitudes about people with disabilities
» Identifying ways to create a barrier-free classroom for students with disabilities
» Involving students with disabilities in the presentation, when appropriate
